How To Properly Maintain Your Prefabricated Shed

Check for Leaks and Damage

Diligence is key. If you observe even something as small as a missing shingle or a crack in a window, you need to take action sooner rather than later. Otherwise, these tiny issues will create bigger ones down the road that will be more time-consuming and costly to repair. Regularly inspecting your shed, especially after bad weather, can help you catch problems before they can really become problematic. Water, in particular, will be your greatest enemy, as moisture that gets into nooks and crannies can cause water damage and result in rot taking root.

Preventing Pest Infestations

In addition to the weather, pests like insects and vermin are keen to turn your shed into their new home. There are a few preventative steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of pests finding their way into your shed. For instance, keeping the immediate area surrounding your shed clear of vegetation or firewood is a good first step. You also don’t want to store garbage cans in your shed, as pests view them as treasure troves of food – the same goes for fertilizers, soil, and seeds if they’re not sealed properly, as the scent will attract pests. Finally, moist areas are perfect for pests to lay their eggs, so moisture is once again your biggest enemy.

Wash and Paint the Exterior

A routine part of how to properly maintain your prefabricated shed is keeping the exterior clean and refreshing the paint as needed. At the very least, you should clean the exterior of your shed once a year to remove dust and grime that would otherwise leave behind stains and provide an ideal environment for mildew to grow. If you intend to use a power washer, you should always keep it on the lowest setting to prevent damage.
